Simon Sinek is great. I have admired him and his content for a while as he always appears to be asking the right questions and a visionary on everything to do with organisations — leadership, hierarchy, millennials, the future of work etc. Sinek usually has something insightful to say.

Therefore, I was super excited to read Start with Why which is a book he published in 2009. The book proposes that inspiration is what we buy into — i.e. knowing a person or company’s WHY. He frames this by using a framework he calls the ‘Golden Circle’ which you can see below.

The Golden Circle shows that in order to grab people’s attention and maybe their wallet too, you have to explain your WHY then your HOW and then your WHAT . This is nothing too outstanding and may explain something like the brand loyalty people have for brands like Apple — who may not actually offer the best product on the market, however people associate the brand with a certain aesthetic and feel.

‘Great leaders … are in pursuit of WHY, they hold themselves accountable to HOW they do it, and WHAT they do serves as the tangible proof of what they believe’ — Quote
